In honor of the upcoming Irish sojourn, we decided to watch this retelling of the Irish Rebellion of the 1916. At this point, I know the events of the uprising pretty well at least better than the events portrayed in this drama. Well the events are there but there isn't a lot of context for them or why certain things are meaningful or even why certain people are meaningful. The story is told from the eyes of some fictional characters caught in the events of the Rising. Some are participants. Some are trying to defeat it. It's kind of a mess and the fact they rarely give you character names makes it harder to follow along.
I'm also missing wide shots in the story. Everything is very tight and boxed in. I don't think they had the budget for bigger sets or VFX so you don't get a wide view of the events. For instance at the General Post Office or GPO, one of the big battle sites, the GPO was shelled by a military vessel in the Liffey River. They only showed explosions going off at the distinctive greek columns on the front of the GPO never where they came from. A wide shot really would have sold what the insurrectionists were up against.
There is also weird love triangles going on all around. There is a pregnancy girl staying at the house of her lover and her lover's wife is there. There is that.
It's not a very good show and doesn't really help with understanding the events of the Easter Rebellion or even show those events very well.

As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm
