Sam Mendes of 1917 and Skyfall fame directs this quieter picture about the people at the Empire Cinema in a little British seaside town back in 1980. I'm loathe to say it's a period piece because that is a period I remember living through. Olivia Coleman plays Hilary kind of a sad woman who is the assistant manager of the Empire falling in love with a much younger Stephen, an African young man dealing with the racism of Thatcher's Britain.
As the film progresses you find out why Hilary seems so sad and quiet. She is taking Lithium for her mental illness. She's probably also sad for another reason. Toby Jones of the MCU plays the projectionist in love with the idea of the beam of light for the films and Colin Firth plays the manager of the Empire.
The film is sad and slow as we explore the relationship between Hillary and Stephen. It does not go well but ends on a slightly promising note.
Not really a Doom film

As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm
