Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song (1971) by Melvin Van Peebles
#1
This is the first time I've cut and pasted a title into the subject line and had a key stick on the paste.

Now that I've gotten that really bad joke out of the way...

I've been wanting to see this movie ever since watching Mario Van Peeble's Baadasssss! (2003), a homage/documentary wherein Mario plays his own father struggling to make and release this film.  I felt Baadasssss! was a very good (and gutsy, revealing a traumatic moment in his own childhood) film.

While it's a bit sloppy (Melvin's first attempt at direction), especially in the action scenes, it's got a undeniable raw power to it, and approaches becoming one long emotional music video with complicated editing cuts.  I can see how it became revolutionary.

I also got to see Mario playing Sweetback at a tender young age, being raised in a whorehouse, and those scenes (censored in some countries) are as shocking as Mario depicted them in Baadasssss!

Recommended for all spellcheckers.
