Going My Way (1944)
#1
The Best picture winner of 1944, Going My Way stars Bing Crosby and Barry Fitzgerald as the young priest and the old priest at St. Dominic's. Crosby comes in to help save the failing St. Dominic's church where Barry Fitzgerald has been the pastor for 45 years. This film won seven academy awards including Best Picture and Best Actor and Supporting Actor for Crosby and Fitzgerald. I remember Barry Fizgerald best as the matchmaker Michael O'Flynn in The Quiet Man.

I'm going to go out on a limb to say this film has not aged well from it's Academy Awards hey day. Most of the scenes just seem to be filler until we get to another musical number for Bing Crosby. The film kind of plods along until they need a dramatic ending so the church burns down and Crosby sells one of his songs to raise the money to help rebuild the church. The main thing Crosby does for the church is start a Boy's Choir which is just another excuse for singing. Plus, Crosby bumps into a friend who happens to be an Opera star at the Met. Naturally, he stays to hear her perform Carmen.

The Queen and I watched this because we stumbled upon the sequel to this film The Bells of St. Mary that has Crosby, again as Father Flannagan opposite Ingrid Bergman who plays the mother superior to the nuns. We might have to continue watching Bells just to get the full story.

Not recommended unless you need a fix of maudlin sentiment.
As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm
