A Criterion collection J-horror flik. Delightfully surreal for the time. Seven girls in enter the yokai world with a diabolical white fluffy cat. The girls are all nicknamed - Gorgeous (who's creepy aunt owns the 'house'), Mac (the chubby, Prof (the literate one with Harry Potter specs), Fantasy (who witnesses everything but no one believes her as she has a vivid imagination), Melody (don't play that piano!), Sweet (cute as a doll), and my fav, Kung Fu. The effects are purposefully cheesey, so much so that almost achieve a level of artistry. It almost felt like an anime in live action. The sets are really cheesey but it works here. No swordfights, dance scenes or dogs, just a really awesome demonic cat (wait 'til you see the painting). Recommended for those who enjoy J-horror or the yokai world as it's clearly a building block of the genre. I even felt there were elements of Totoro in it, as I consider that a great yokai world depiction - Miyazaki was a master of bring the yokai world to life.
