The Dragon Missile (1976)
#1
You know what last night was? Flying Five Finger One Armed Eight Pole Shaolin Exploding Death Touch Thursday on EL REY!

The Dragon Missile is Shaw, but the Kung Fu isn't that good really. It's directed by Ho Menghua, who made films from the late 50s to the early 90s, was stronger in horror like Black Magic and high camp like Mighty Peking Man, than Kung Fu films. This was somewhat of a follow up to his best known KF flick, The Flying Guillotine. Ho likes decapitation scenes and the Dragon Missiles, wielded by the ever villainous Lo Lieh, are like these double Kukri boomerangs that cut through anything, stone, trees, and necks, often with magical explosions. Ho likes bloody jerking decapitated bodies and dark scenes with lots of shadows and architecture at weird angles. SPOILER ALERT the finale plan to beat the dragon missiles is to catch them with fishing nets, which seems rather silly when the missiles cut through stone but whatev END SPOILER The fights are choppy and not well rehearsed. There is more emphasis on trampoline jumps and other acrobatics. Some other weird weapons are used, like double chain whips made from arm rings and switchblades that pop out of one woman's fingertips like Wolverine claws (more like Lady Deathstrike, but I'm not a big enough Marvel fanboy and had to look that up). There's an exploitative topless scene for Terry Lau. Sword fights a plenty.

The Guillotines (viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3008) is more of a remake of Dragon Missile than Flying Guillotines, at least where the titular weapon is concerned.

The lackluster fight choreography can be redeemed in entertainment value if your attention is turned to the henchmen mob in the background. They are always moving back and forth in a random way, just to add excitement to the fight scene, but when watched directly, their actions - or inactions - are rather comical.
