Four Navy Seals head off on a recon into the wilds of Afghanistan. You'll never guess what happens next. Maybe you will. It stars Marky Mark so you won't guess who the titular hero is of this flick. Marky Mark is also a producer, so I'm really sure you won't guess.
This movie was quite good. It opens with some brutal footage of the BUDS Seal training center in San Diego, which again showed how much I don't want to be a Navy SEAL.
Remember how they built the tension in Jaws? You knew there was a deadly shark out there, you just didn't know when it was going to attack. Lone Survivor had a similar set-up. You saw all the soldiers getting ready for their mission and all you could think was to reach through the screen and stop them, but you couldn't.
It was all very military porn with studs in uniforms, doing manly things surrounded by tons of cool military gear. I didn't have my usual boredom waiting for them to get to the point. Once they do get to the action, it is insane. The problem with how improbable it all seems, is that they have autopsy reports to show how much horror the soldiers went through. Just incredible.
No sword fights, but plenty of gun and rocket play. Oddly, Marky Mark had the smarmy turned way low in his acting so I actually felt for him. Well, a little.
I did get the DVD and it came complete with all the Extras and there were plenty. One vid showed the real Marcus Luttrell, played by Marky Mark. It also showed the making of the film with all the participants telling how they wanted to be truthful and honor the fallen soldiers. I guess I have seen too many fakes spouting the same lines so it probably didn't come across as honest as it should.
They also had a behind the scenes of the staging of the mammoth gun battle that is the centerpiece of the film. This short proved once again that stunt guys are crazy. Not as crazy as SEALs but still crazy.
