Omagh
#1
The film I watched instead of Tai Chi 0

In 1998, a bomb went off in Omagh killing 38 and wounding over 200. This is the story leading up to the blast and it's aftermath on the families of the victims.

This is a brutal film. It is shot documentary style with a lot of handheld camerwork which gives the whole picture a voyeuristic feel. As if you are in the room with these people as they struggle with grief and the quest for justice.

The first twenty minutes of the film are probably the most uncomfortable and suspenseful minutes of any film I have seen recently. You know something bad is going to happen but you can do nothing about it.

The film centers on Michael Gallagher and his family who's son Aidan was killed in the blast. It details him coming to grips with the news and then the building of the Omagh support group. The group meets all the major players into the investigation for the bombers. It's heartbreaking what happens.

No Bollywood. A terrific explosion. No swordfights. But a great, if emotionally wrenching film.
