Um...wow.
In the Tudor Period, Fencing Masters were classified in the Vagrancy Laws along with Actors, Gypsys, Vagabonds, Sturdy Rogues, and the owners of performing bears.

With CF no less. 8)
Awesome 3D. In fact, I don't think this will work in 2D. And best of all, there's a sword fight!
More extensive review forthcoming.

This won me over somewhere in the middle. Up until then I was lamenting Hollywood's growing infatuation with mechanical CGI, leaving no room for characters. Also, I agree with a DM post-movie comment (apologies for stealing a bit of your thunder), which is that he misses the guys in rubber suits.
Long live Godzilla with his zipper! (That zipper was occasionally visible in those old movies).
The movie is absurd. I mean, the premise is absurd. But it succeeds by making that absurd premise while charging full-bore into the action, giving one time only to murmur, "Ab--" and by the time there's enough of a pause (of which there are few) to finish your utterance, you can't recall where that "Ab--" was headed. Abalone? Abacus? Abbreviation?
Some real characters do start emerging by the midstory, and who knows, maybe they're stereotypes, maybe not, but they're colorful, and they do interesting stuff, and several subplots are kicking in, and thank heavens del Toro knows the importance of humor. So while it certainly isn't a masterpiece, it did ultimately engage me and showed a new side to 3D.
DM, were your eyes dry, itchy and fatigued afterwards? Mine were. I'm thinking it was because this 3D movie is filled with futuristic 3D screens floating at different depths and seen from different angles during tracking shots and shaking, and my eyes were ever "seeking." Then again, I've been doing an awful lot of reading and writing lately....
One thing the movie could really have used: those singing twin maidens from the Mothra films. But even without them, it makes for a decent outing.

I just watched both of these and got chills. Spoooooooooooooky.
I decided that not enough world landmarks were destroyed in Pac Rim. That's going into the review. That and my rubber suits comment.
My eyes were not itchy. I was too tired to itch.

Worthy of note: for 'research' i started watching both Transformers 3 and Godzilla vs. Mothra. I got only about a half hour into each before nodding off. That's more of a testament to my schedule which has me rising at 6AM nowadays than the quality of those films. I may go back for GvM though.

So after the BOC concert, T got interested in Godzilla, so we watched G vs. M on Hulu. T was amused by the dated special effects, bored by the long soundtrack-less dialog, tripped out by Mothra's mini-music girls, and really enjoyed all the Godzilla scenes, laughing uproariously when Mothra grabbed Godzilla by the tail and dragged him around. She also wound up rooting for Godzilla, like we all do. Godzilla still rocks.
Godzilla also has the same expression as our cat, specifically in the eyes.

Bad dialogue, crappy acting, plots with huge holes. This film had it all. Ron Perlman did a great job. The film needed more Ron. It was okay in 2D, but the whole film came across as murky. I wish everything wasn't so dark and rainy so we could have gotten a better look at the Kaiju and the Jaegers.
I was wishing I was surrounded by my Doom brothers to mock with me the wooden acting and pretentious line readings. The poor Queen kept rolling her eyes and shaking her head in dismay. Probably rethinking her life choices.

This movie had everything: Giant monsters, giant fighting robots, absolutely pointless martial arts, one-note acting, superficially interesting secondary characters that were wiped out before we could find out if they were really interesting, Ron Perlman, and the best underwater nuclear explosion ever. And Ron Perlman.
Best free rental EVER!
What? I *paid* to see it?
Well, crap.

Well, you would have felt worse if you paid for Capt. Phillips.
