The Prisoner of Heaven by Carlos Ruiz Zafon
#1
Daniel Sempere is back. First introduced in Angel's Game and Shadow of the Wind, Daniel is back again talking about books. This book has more clarification about Daniel Martin, but mostly it is about Daniel's mysterious friend, Fermin.

This book is much more accessible than Zafon's other two books. It is basically a reinterpretation of 'The Count of Monte Christo'. Or maybe it would be better to say that they use the Dumas book as a touchstone. Basically, a stranger comes into the Sempere book store and talks about Fermin and Fermin's past. Fermin then has to tell his story which up to this point has been a mystery. Fermin spent time in the Barcelona prison during the civil war. There he met Daniel Martin, who was the focal point of Angel's game. Martin and Fermin plot to escape the prison which Fermin eventually does.

I really like the tone of these books. They remind me a lot of the Alatriste novels. In fact I keep waiting for Alatriste to walk out of one the side streets and occasionally I get the plots of the novels confused in my small brain. But I liked 'Prisoner of Heaven' It gives more clues to the mysteries. I think I really need to go back and read the first two so I can straighten things out.
So much for the flickr badge idea. Dammit
