This has got to be one of the most anticipated Direct2DVDs Disney has produced. Disney has created a whole line of Fairies for Tink - see http://disney.go.com/fairies/ - that includes dolls, books, costumes, playsets, anything really - it's Disney. There's also a really good book series by Gail Carson Levine (Ella Enchanted - the book, not the movie). There are two volumes - Fairy Dust and the Quest For the Egg & Fairy Haven and the Quest for the Wand - and they're both really well done. They take the Barrie's Neverland and really expands it all. Levine's books honor Barrie, as well as the icon that Tink has become via Disney (she's scattering fairy dust in the opening of every Disney flick!) Materializing out of that is a very mediocre series by Disney authors that uses the same characters and universe, but it's just pulp. Tinkerbell the DVD has a great cast - Angelica Huston (!) Loreena McKinnett, Lucy Liu (who has yet to impress me in anything and is a flat voice actress) Kristen Chenowith, Jesse Mcartny, Disney regular Raven (Raven plays the black fairy just like Liu plays the Asian one). Jonh Lasseter is Exec Producer. I found the DVD is really disappointing but the rest of the fam liked it. I think they should have just followed the books (I always think this about movies made from books) but instead, it was very loosely adapted. The exclusion of Mother Dove, a major character in Levine's series, took a lot of the depth of the story out. Tink's character is poorly rendered, not at all like in the books, same with the other faires. There's some nods to Disney's PP, like when Tink gets all hot in the face, or the fact that she's got the skimpiest outfit and is all legs and wings, but they stick out glaringly as out-of-character attempts to associate it with the original. There's a totally predictable toss to Barrie at the very end, but the actualization of this was really mediocre and we'd expect so much more for Tink. A sequel is coming, of course.
Things were getting dull around here so I thought I'd toss you a bone. Have a field day with me and Tink.
