Joe Strummer: The Future is unwritten
#1
I liked the Clash. London Calling is one of my favorite songs. I was happy to find out one of the songs I liked from the TV show John From Cincinnati "Johnny Appleseed" was by a much later Joe Strummer. I was curious to find out what happened in between. I was curious to find out about the Clash as well.
This film kind of does that. It's more of a eulogy than a full on biopic. One of the thematic elements is every one sits around the campfire talking about Joe, recounting their interactions with Mr. Strummer. They have bonfires set up in London, New York and Los Angeles. It was almost cannonization for St. Joe. There were some negative reactions about Joe, but on the whole he was a fabulous man.
I wanted a more traditional doc. I wanted Joe did this and then Joe did this. It was there but it was kind of fuzzy.
I did learn some interesting things. His father was a civil servant, serving in many foreign locals. Joe is a product of public schools. There was some interesting stuff that I wish they had spent more time on. He was a squatter in London when he started his first band. That band wa ticked off when he left to start the Clash.
There weren't a lot of notes on the Clash. It was a quick they started, they toured, they hated each other, they broke up.

The film left me wanting more but it did give some basic stuff
So much for the flickr badge idea. Dammit

I like the bit where they wanted Joe to be missing for a tour so they could generate press, but he didn't go into hiding where they wanted him to, he went to France and ran the Paris marathon.

The bonfire interview thing was to play off the bonfires he hosted later in his career. I thought Johnny Depp came off as extremely vapid. It was like listening to an art critic. It had all the right words, but didn't really say anything.

I didn't get into the Mescaleros until after Joe's passing. It was nice to get a little bio on how that happened.

Joe/Woody seemed to be an asshole, but toned it down in later life. He did some great music and it's sad that there won't be more.
