La Vie en Rose

I enjoyed it. I love movies about musicians because there's a built in soundtrack. I love tortured artist tales on general principal. I knew nothing of Edith Piaf before this, so it was all new. The only actor I knew was Depardieu and well, I won't spoil it. Marion Cotillard turns an extraordinary performance.

Like Atonement, this is another period Euro art flick that does doesn't more linearly through time and has an absolutely amazing swirling continuous shot scene that is just technically astounding. But above Atonement, this one just focuses on Cotillard's range which was probably worthy of best actress just based on that alone. Can't spoil it tho. It's too good a scene.

This is not a happy film. It's basically one long death scene. I recommend watching it while sipping top shelf hard liquor.

Fabulouse but dark and gritty cinemetography. It was like watching a slow motion train wreck. Edith's life start bad and then goes inexorably downhill. I didn't stay for the end.

My problem was everybody kept saying Edith Piaf was a fantastic talent. But everyt time she sang all i could think was really? That was supposed to be fantastic? If I thought the singing was fantastic, maybe I would have stayed until the end. I got up to the death of her gangster mentor and the abduction of her underage roommate.
So much for the flickr badge idea. Dammit

It's gets soooooo much darker. That's the beauty of it. The fall hasn't even really begun when her gangster b/f gets it. You pulled out way too early. Tragedeus interuptus.

And Piaf's voice is like Holiday or Joplin, seasoned with tragedy, rich with irony, blues French style. You won't get it without several good shots of cheap hard liquor. I'd argue the same for Holiday or Joplin.

I confess, this was a French film I liked. This and Amelie.
