Movies that don't hold up - Greg - 10-10-2022
Omega Man (1971)
I think I saw this film back in the 1970s and thought it was the greatest film ever. Charlton Heston was a man among men. I loved everything about it.
They screened Omega Man over the weekend on TCM and I thought I would give it another look. Oh, boy. The film has not withstood the test of time. Although, I did really enjoy seeing LA in the 1970s and seeing the old Warner Brothers Back-Lot. One piece in the film on the back lot still stands today.
So, they paired NRA-Heston with all these hippies to give it some cross generational appeal. They made Heston wear all these very frilly outfits and hats. It would have been nice if Heston's stunt double looked like Heston. It looks like it was shot on the cheap, like they handed the movie off to the TV department to make. The lighting is all very bright. The sets look like sets. The camera angles are all very traditional.
There is one thing in the film that seriously bothered me from a logic standpoint. Heston lives in this fortress of a townhouse. Barbwire and sandbags in front of the windows. Locks on everything. He's got a .50cal machine gun on the roof. And yet, he has a set of french doors leading to a balcony and he always leaves those doors open, even when the Zombie/Vampires are having a bonfire in front of his house. Two of the times he is attacked, they come through that door.
You could say the film, though, is so bad it's good because of the heavy cheese factor.

I saw that as a double feature with "The Neptune Factor." I thought it was scary at the time. I also liked Heston then, I think because of Ben Hur and Planet of the Apes.
The Heston film that has stood the test of time (besides Planet of the Apes) is Soylent Green.

I'll argue that Soylent Green has gotten even better with time. Aged to maturity like fine whiskey.
And this year, 2022, is the year to rewatch it.
