Waiting for Dali (2023)
#1
Set in Spain in the 70s when they were rebelling against Franco, three Barcelonans flee to Cadaques  to avoid the police. They get jobs at The Surreal, a restaurant filled with Dali-esque art hoping to get Salvador Dali to eat there. It’s a foodie film, celebrating French haute cuisine, as well as a rom-com. What really made it work for me was that it was shot in Cadaques, and it captures some of the beauty of Port Ligat, which is simply inspirational. Such a gorgeous landscape - it was fun to see again for me. It’s more about the characters, each of which have their journey, and Dali is more of a background figure, shown only from behind and given no lines. Gala is well depicted as the shrewd gatekeeper, but her role is fairly minor too. A well told story with some excellent cinematography. I was distracted, swept back to that gorgeous shoreline in the shadow of the master. It’s in Spanish, French and a small bit of Russian with a cast I didn’t recognize except for one actor - Moscow from Money Heist.

Recommended for D00M Dali fans.
