Alien Romulus

You've seen this movie...

I went with my friend Jerry to an IMAX showing. This installment takes place in the timeline between Alien and Aliens. I'd heard good things about it, but to me, it felt like this summer's jump scare movie. None of the actors were particularly compelling. I thought the CGI for the Rook character (trying to mimic the late Ian Holms likeness) was poorly executed compared to some other recent CGI acting (eg: the most recent Indiana Jones). There were way too many set ups to allow the actors to repeat catchphrases from previous installments. Soundtrack wasn't particularly good. There's one particular shot where the camera pans over their ship while it's still on the ground and cranes over to the pilot cabin window where you can see the crew inside get into their seats. It feels to me to be an obvious model, not quite good enough quality to carry the scene. Maybe IMAX was too high a resolution for it.

I don't know where this one stacks up against the other umpteen Alien movies in the franchise. It didn't break continuity as far as I can tell, like Prometheus did. but over all, I wouldn't recommend it. It was meh...

Wait for the smalll screen. Until then, watch out for xenomorphs

Thanks. I was toying with seeing this on the big screen, but Ill heed your advice.

I toy with seeing a lot on the big screen and seldom do anymore...

I guess I didn't know enough about this one, because I really enjoyed it. I loved how it reframed all the old tropes. Some of the scary bits were really amazing balls out sort of thing. I really liked the look of this. The action kept going. If anything bad could happen it did. I think this would have looked phenomenal on the big screen but it worked well on my little screen.

The film does conclude but there is a big door open for a sequel.

Seen on Hulu.
As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm
