Ripley (2024)
#1
No, not the story of hero of Alien. Steve Zaillian remakes the movie The Talented Mr. Ripley that starred Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jude Law which was based on Patricia Highsmith novels. After watching the first two episodes last night, I can't imagine Matt Damon in the role of Ripley.

Andrew Scott, who I always think of as Moriarty from PBS's Sherlock, plays Ripley as the small time grifter who goes to Italy supposedly to talk Dickie Greenleaf into returning to New York to see his parents. But Ripley gives up that plan and starts on his own plan. And it is creepy. Scott plays Ripley as a complete sociopath struggling to be a real boy. The show is shot in glorious black and white and each shot is stunning. There is some humor in the show but mostly it is creepy in a really good way.

I really didn't like it. I thought it was too slow and working too hard to be arty and set the mood. Plus the actors are not at all the right ages - Andrew Scott is 47. It makes way more sense that they should be much younger, with Greenleaf idling away his 20s.

Scott is too old but the arty stuff was working for me. The set decoration to recreate the 1950s was great. A lot of great attention to detail.
