American Fiction (2023)
#1
Jeffrey Wright is author Thelonius 'Monk' Ellison a writer who hasn't sold a book in a long time. His agent wants him to write a more 'black' book. Monk responds "How could it be anything else. I'm black" Monk also deals with tremendous family problems. His mother starts to suffer from dementia. His brother is unhappy in his marriage. And Monk's sister struggles to keep the family together. Monk writes the black novel after seeing Sintara Golden have big success with her black novel. Monk does it to show how absurd the idea is that black authors can only tell stories about hip-hop and gangs and crime. Until the novel becomes a big success.

The other theme of the movie is to show that African-American families are just the same as everybody elses families with their inherent problems. The film is quite good at showing the absurdities of the situation for monk. But it is also heartbreaking to watch his struggles.

No sword fights. Quality storytelling.
As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm
