Hell @ Asian Art
#1
It’s a modest exhibit showing off various pieces of the collection, several I’ve seen before but a few new ones to me. It’s very darkly lit with lots of shadow screens. Somehow I’ve never heard the Japanese myth of the hag of hell. There were several depictions of her. The Indonesian stuff was the most interesting because it was the most unfamiliar. Lots of Yama. Lots of Jizo too, which makes sense in retrospect but I had not associated him with hell previously. I enjoyed it but I’m glad I didn’t make a special trip because I expected more (the hell dioramas at Tiger Balm gardens have spoiled me).

After the exhibit, I paid respect to my favorite blades in the Chinese and Japanese sections. Spent most of my time oggling their magnificent kris display.

It was the perfect time killer while I was waiting for Tara to get off work. Buck Mason is only a 15 walk away.

One more thing - there was this modern video playing that was horrific - disturbing cgi imagery - very hellish. I found it mesmerizing and kept imagining it to other darker soundtracks.

Something by Krzysztof Penderecki would’ve worked.
