It's Mando! Dragging a child across the post apocalyptic landscape. Was this based on a video game of some sorts?

Yes, a very popular one at that... (Never played, but bought it as a gift for my son based on recommendations from coworkers). There is also a sequel to the game called "Last of Us 2"

Looks very similar to The Road (2009), starring Viggo Mortenson and some runt kid.

I am currently unsure whether we are still getting free HBO because of our LIEphone plan. It's supposed to be free but last month they charged us. It probably has something with trying to get into the account last week when it suddenly asked for a password.
Since we don't have HBO now, I was leery of getting invested in this show. But I'd been hearing good things so I caved.
Sadly, I liked the show. It's based on a video game. The Mandolorian is the star. The story is in three parts. The first part is the warning that a fungus apocalypse could occur where a fungus could turn people into Zombies. The next part is the start of the Fungus Among Us. This was the best part as you follow the Mandolorian's daughter while terrible things start to happen around her which she at first doesn't notice. There are a lot of First Person Shooter perspective as they drive through streets where all hell is breaking loose. The final section is twenty years into Fungalypse where people live in walled quarantine areas reminiscent of a police state. The Mandolorian is kind of sketchy but he is getting ready to break out of the prison with a mysterious girl.
Lots of Booms. Lots of creepy fungus paranoia. It was well done and kind of fun. I'm going to say watch this if you get the chance. Now I just have to straighten out the problems before the next episode drops.

Ep02 The Escape from Boston.
It doesn't go well. There is a lot of booms and running and hiding from the fungus zombies. The kid is annoying and there is a really gross, disturbing kiss.

Ep03 Wow. Such a daring episode for a genre episode. I can't think this is part of the game, but who knows.
It's starts with the Mandolorian and the annoying kid and I thought I was watching the wrong episode. But then it does and extend flashback about Bill and Frank. Nick Offerman plays bill the prepper who is not going to be evacuated and spends the early days making his house super secure. Then Frank stumbles in and they begin an unlikely and romantic relationship. The flashback covers over a decade of their journey together. There are lots of twists and turns and it is quite moving with an unexpected ending.
Takes the show up a notch but I can imagine the horror from the fans about a gay relationship in the middle of their post-apocalyptic shoot em up.

Ep04 Back on the road. The bonding episode. All is good until they get to Kansas City, then bad things happen. Fear the bad jokes.

Ep05 The escape from Kansas. This episode has kind of weird arc. You don't know where you are in the episode until much later in the episode. It's the back story to what is going in the town before the Mandolorian and kid show up. Then it's how they get the hell out of Kansas. It seems to be going really well until it isn't. And it isn't in a big way.
This episode sets up some big questions like do you rescue the villain? They aired this episode early to get it out of the way of the Superb Owl.

Ep06 Kind of a quiet episode. The duo continue their walk to find the brother. And then they travel some more to find the fireflies. There is so much nothing happening you just know something bad is coming. And it does.

Ep07 Another flashback to tell the story of the young girl on the show, Ellie. Ella is played by Bella Ramsey who I think got her start on GoT. Anyway, it is here in a youth camp in Boston and she meets up with her friend who has joined the resistance. They spend a special night in an abandoned mall until it becomes less special. The show starts and ends in the same place as Ep06, so grrr. But it was a nice sweet episode in the middle of the mold zombie apocalypse.

Ep08 Another good tense episode. I'm against the depiction of shooting animals and in this one we got to see that twice. They promised brief nudity and again that's not the kind of nudity I want to see. Other than that, some good fights scenes. Mostly fight scenes in this one. But this episode proves Joel and Ellie are not to be trifled with.

HBOMax didn't want me to see this episode. I had to re-sign in once and then I had to reboot the entire app. It was kinky.
S1 Ep09 was devastating. We finally got to learn about Bella's birth and why she is immune to the fungus. We also learned that Joel doesn't play around. At the end, The Last of Us was a really good story well told with lots of tugs on the heart strings.
