The Addams Family

I'm bummed I didn't get the platinum edition, just season 1 of the original series. I loved this show as a kid. I love it even more as an adult. Great stuff - totally timeless, even in black and white. The Munsters and the movies pale by comparison. Strangely, when the discs arrived in the mail, the case had been crunched, but the DVDs were unaffected and it makes the boxes appear all the more menacing.

Must get season 2.

I was always an Addams Family addict, just couldn't get into the Munsters. The Frankenstein monster was just too harmlessly goofy, for one. Is this a "Who's your favorite Bond?" sort of thing, where the answer reveals some hidden truth about you?

You know, like, if you preferred the Munsters, you're a worthless scumbag without an ounce of goth in you, and you're going to get buried in very black peat.

Some of my high school friends liked the Munsters, but I can't remember who they were. So I can't begin to test my hypothesis. Anyone?

I totally agree. It's sort of like comparing Monty Python to Benny Hill. Yes, they're both British comedy, but they appeal to different tastes. I totally wanted to be Morticia. I would never have wanted to emulate anyone from the Munsters.

Of course, I've got tons of MP committed to memory, a frightening amount really, more of my gray matter is dedicated to MP lines than I'd care to admit. I don't have a single BH line memorized, just that yakkety-sax song and Hill's angels.

But I can't stand the Munsters. That show was just lame. There's no comparison between them and the Addam's Family. I was at an NYE show and we were discussing Xmas gifts, and this boorish dude leaped upon my Addam's Family DVD comment by talking about how much he liked the Munsters. I just walked away from the conversation. No need to waste my time there.

Ah, but do you have a penguin on top of your telly? I do. :-)

That would be riposte for Mr. DM.

Addams Family was great, but the movies were also quite good and a little more like the original comics. John Astin's glee was/is still really funny and Caroline Jones...well, she was pretty hot in the ultimate Goth way.

Munsters? Cool car, anyway...

The only downside of Morticia was that she was a poor fencer.  Hard to lunge in that outfit.  Still, that opening fencing scene always makes me wince, sort of like Emma Peel doing her funky martial arts in the opening credits of the Avengers.

One thing I hated about the movies was that they let Thing out of the box.  Thing needs to be in the box - it leaves more to the imagination.  What lies beyond that wrist is anyone's guess.  Also I didn't care for Reverend Jim as Fester.  I liked Christina Ricci at the time (who didn't?) but after seeing Lisa Loring in the original role, Lisa seems more genuine.  Also I like the original in B&W - that just works better, like the original Twlight Zone.  But still, I should give the films another shot.

I really enjoyed Raul Julia and Anjelica Huston. And some of the sets were quite good. I particularly liked the subterranean gondola scene.

And let's not forget Joan Cusak in the second one, and the ridiculous summer camp.

Can't comment on the show since I haven't seen it since childhood. Although it did make we want to learn to stand on my head.

The Addams Family (2019)

This animated film seem to come and go at the local cinema with nary a blip on the radar. I can't even recall why I put it in the Netflix queue. But it arrived and I made the Queen watch it under duress. (She did not watch Ford vs Ferarri. It's about racing right? I'll be in my office) But it was good. They seemed to use Charles Addams drawing for the basis for all the character designs, which was nice. There were tons of visual and auditory jokes that the filmmakers kept throwing out the there.

It's the origin story of how the Addams came to live in their current house and how they met everyone. Their nemesis is the planned community of Assimilation which is the town closest to their home. There is a reality show angle and a social media angle.

The voice cast is really good with Alison Janney, Charlize Theron, Chloe Grace Moretz leading the way. I don't know how they got Snoop Dogg to play Cousin It.

And best of all it's all based on Pugsley's upcoming coming of age sword fight, the Saber-Mazurska. So, sword fight for the win.

It's not a revelatory film. It does hit you with the message of inclusivity a lot. But it was entertaining.

I was going to give this a miss, but I'll put it on the list now.

There were a few bits that made me chuckle.

Plus, Charlize is doing an accent that made me think of Eva Green.

What is it with you EvaDOOMers?  I would rather Eva do an accent that makes me think of Charlize.

We used to watch the Munsters just because it was on. I remember that the best part was in the credits, when the stairway would pop up and the dragon underneath would shoot fire. That's about my only memory of it.

The new animated Addams Family looked odd to me, like they couldn't get the faces right.
