Man, I gotta finish this Rajamouli piece and get out of this rabbit hole.
A petty thief gets a magic necklace from a girl as a child. She is told that it will signify her prince. He keeps trying to get rid of it, but it follows him incessantly. She grows to be an heiress yet a slave to her family. He remains a petty thief, working for a hawt fence who scams him so he winds up ending her money. In frustration, he curses Yama, the god of death. Yama loses face before the other gods and arranges for him to die prematurely. But then he takes over hell…
I could go on - this is only about half of a nearly 3 hour movie.
I’m seeing Rajamouli’s formulas. He loves karmic/fate tales and the gods are very much alive in his films. I feel you need to have a grasp of Indian gods to get that.
His fight choreography is ridiculous with bodies flying everywhere - here the main hit man gets punched so hard in a slow mo face wobbling close up from the blow so hard that an eyebrow piercing gets blown out the other side of his head. Yea, that earned the dm patented ultravi chuckle.
His dance numbers are explosive - everything I want from Tollywood dance scenes and more. The thief is N T Rama Rao jr aka NTR. In a dance off where he steals Yama’s hawt threesome dancers, he echoes Michael Jackson, and then dances with his real life grandfather who was also a movie star (and politician) who is digitally imposed because he’s dead.
There’s also a theme of the thief not being able to leave a temple or he will die - akin to that other movie based on Keaton.
He shows of temple ruins well as panoramic backdrops. His sense of cgi kingdoms is cheesy and overblown yet aesthetically delightful.
He works up to these absurdly sentimental climactic moments that give me the feels unexpectedly - themes of devotion and sacrifice that are refreshingly moral and moving.
Watched on YouTube with subtitles and commercials (lots of commercials).
Not D00M recommended. This was my least favorite of his films so far.
