Turning Red
I just got pitched an interview with Rosalie Chan (voice of Mei Lee), the director, and producer. I'll probably pass tho. It's SF & Azn based, but my plate is full...
Reading the invite again. This is an event at SF Zoo. Not sure if there's an in-person aspect (they're naming a panda 'Mei Lee' in honor of this film) but that's sure tempting if there is...

I pitched it to Den as straight-up coverage but they didn't take it. However they are open to something with a better angle. I'm haggling between Den and the promo rep.
As if I don't have enough going on already...
...but it's Pixar. It's about pandas. It's SF where I left my heart. And it's about menstruation.
wait...what? (03-08-2022, 07:53 PM)Greg Wrote: I'm watching it Friday or this weekend.
I'm positioning this for Greg for this weekend.
I think I'm going to bail. Can't seem to sort a decent topic for Den. Don't care to make the stretch for KFM (I did consider a Kung Fu Panda tie).
Maybe Greg and I can do one of those 'watch together' things. Because a Pixar movie about menstruation sounds D00M?

The official PR...
Quote:SAN FRANCISCO ZOO TO NAME FEMALE RED PANDA AFTER MAIN CHARACTER MEI LEE IN DISNEY AND PIXAR’S “TURNNG RED” – STREAMING ONLY ON DISNEY+ STARTING THIS FRIDAY, MARCH 11
ROSALIE CHIANG, THE VOICE OF MEI LEE, JOINS “TURNING RED” DIRECTOR DOMEE SHI AND PRODUCER LINDSEY COLLINS AT THE SPECIAL EVENT
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (March 8, 2022) – The San Francisco Zoo has announced that in celebration of this Friday’s release of Disney and Pixar’s “TURNING RED” on Disney+, they will be naming their female red panda Mei Lee after the star of the new film. Rosalie Chiang, San Francisco Bay Area native and the voice of Mei Lee, will join “TURNING RED” Director Domee Shi and Producer Lindsey Collins at the special event.
Since research is always important to Pixar, Turning Red director Domee Shi and members of the production team traveled to the San Francisco Zoo to study red pandas. Artists took photos, drew sketches, and observed their actions and behavior. The collected research helped the filmmaking team design and animate Red Panda Mei in the film.
The naming of the red panda will give visitors to the zoo a memorable opportunity to learn more about the beautiful animal that served as the inspiration for Red Panda Mei. Visitors to the exhibit will be able to learn about red pandas while also seeing images of Pixar artists on their research trips to the zoo.
About the San Francisco Zoo & Gardens Red Panda Treehouse:
San Francisco Zoo & Gardens Red Panda Treehouse opened in 2014. Here, guests can view red pandas through a large viewing window, as they navigate a series of climbing structures and from high perspectives from their treehouse. The 16-foot-tall custom tree house was designed and built as part of a project by the reality series, Treehouse Masters. There are other treehouses as well, to give each of the red pandas an opportunity to rest away from the other red pandas, as they are solitary by nature. There is grass growing in the habitat for the red pandas to snack on as well as bamboo plants that can be refreshed. In addition to the climbing structures, animal care staff frequently rotate their toys to keep them interested in exploring and scent-marking. Both red pandas enjoy coming down to their pool to drink water and large outdoor pods are available for overnight use that they can access through overhead chutes.
About “Turning Red”:
Disney and Pixar’s “Turning Red” introduces Mei Lee (voice of Rosalie Chiang), a confident, dorky 13-year-old torn between staying her mother’s dutiful daughter and the chaos of adolescence. Her protective, if not slightly overbearing mother, Ming (voice of Sandra Oh), is never far from her daughter—an unfortunate reality for the teenager. And as if changes to her interests, relationships and body weren’t enough, whenever she gets too excited (which is practically ALWAYS), she “poofs” into a giant red panda! Directed by Academy Award® winner Domee Shi (Pixar short “Bao”) and produced by Lindsey Collins (“Finding Dory”), “Turning Red launches exclusively on Disney+ on March 11, 2022.
I bailed. The rep understood.

Pixar does Carrie. I couldn't shake the menstruation metaphors (in either film). Some of the 'be yourself' themes seemed especially strong.
I thought it was too frenetic in the beginning, but it fell into a rhythm soon enough. Then it got very predictable. Then it surprised me with the kaiju spin. Then it got predictable again. It did get a giggle out of me. It bordered on some feels. There were some good subtle Chinese culture details, like the tiger mom/panda dad bit. I wonder if this will get approved for PRC. It has potential there I think.
I'm glad I didn't try to review it for KFM. That would've been a total miss. There's a flash of Tai Chi, and James Hong (our KFTC 10 year gala MC) with a daoist coin sword, and that's it. It would've been a stretch.
It was nice to see a Disney mother/daughter film because moms usually die (think Bambi, Snow White, Cinderella...) I wonder what my family will think of this.
Recommended for D00M Pixar fans.

I liked it. I laughed multiple times. Thoroughly enjoyed the Kaiju bit.
I read one review of a reviewer who said unless you are an Asian Toronto Tween this film doesn't have a lot to offer to you. I disagree. It's a good story about that awkward time between child and teen. And then those awkward teen years. Phinneas and Billie Eilish make great boy band songs.

Yeah, that critic has been chastised (assuming you're talking about the Cinema Blend tweet by Sean O'Connell). They've retracted it and apologized. It was one of those 'open mouth, insert foot' things.
RM's director is on tour with Eilish right now.
