After NY Ninja (http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomFor...p?tid=6836) I fell into the John Liu rabbit hole. ZKD is Liu’s own invention and he did promote it in Paris, plus he made this odd flick. Liu plays himself in his fantasy Paris where martial rivals challenge him a lot.
It’s incoherent, as if someone just spliced together a bunch of half baker ideas for stories, in hopes of justifying a lot of absurd fight scenes. At the end, it just kind of dissolves. I suppose it’s existential - that’s the French part. But overall, it’s incoherent.
The fight choreo is ridiculous but Liu and some of the others have skill, so despite being unconvincing, they are acrobatically impressive. Liu is a super kicker with an extraordinary right leg.
There’s so much randomness - flailing attempts at artsy fartsy style that almost work for the 80s but mostly come off like ‘huh?’ It’s a nice snapshot of many Parisian tourist spots with few tourists.
They just shot this in the streets. You can see people in the background just passing by minding their own business while peeps are fighting high kicking duels in gis - sometimes a bystander glances towards the camera with a wtf? expression.
There’s this funky soundtrack that plays well when Liu gets in the ZKD zone.
Lots of women in bikinis. In fact, I think every actress is only wearing a bikini.
This would make a fine D00M flick. It’s just so absurd but there’s entertainment value there too.
Seen on YouTube with ads and Spanish subtitles (it’s in English).
