i come home from practice to a text msg from an old music scene friend saying ‘sad news’
After asking for clarification, one of our comrades, Jenn Alvey has died. She’s been a music scene comrade for over a quarter century.
Jenn started in RM but was very headstrong and self centered, and ran afoul of the org to get blackballed. But she was smart. She had a sharp eye for group dynamics, a good memory for names and a nose for wicked politics - a queen of gossip - and jumped to the Warfield/Fillmore crew. She got in a lot of feuds and skirmishes but we always kept the peace.
A typical example was that the Med crew for Warfield took a group pic when the venue changed management, marking the end of an era. There were a half dozen of us who were in the core squad and she sat herself in the middle. The photo was framed and placed on the Fillmore wall, but she threw a fit about it demanding it be taken down because she didn’t look good (she struggled with self consciousness about her weight even though she wasn’t that fat). Many arguments ensued until a sad face sticker was placed over her face to obscure her identity.
She was a friend but one that I kept at arms length. She would dish gossip to me every time we chatted, some was useful intel because she was far more engaged in that, while the rest would be tiresome as she would try to manipulate me into her camp.
I cannot remember the last time we crossed paths. Probably at the Fillmore or maybe some festival. I’m thinking it was in the last 5 years but not within the last 2 years.
I’m morbidly curious what the cause of death was. I’m guessing she was in her late 40s early 50s. She was always heavily made up, but was skilled at that, not garishly so, and disguised her age well that way.
