I had a real problem tracking this book. I almost gave up on it. But I eventually pushed my way to the end.
4 Blackfoot Indians in North Dakota have an epic hunting night in an area that it is illegal for them to hunt in. Plus they kill an animal that doesn't want to be killed. 10 years later that animal comes back for them. It's part horror novel and part depiction of modern Indian life. I guess I'm getting a little queasy in my old depiction in my old age because the graphic depictions of harm to animals really turned me off. The murder of the humans, not so much, but still pretty graphic.
I think the biggest problem I had with the book was that I never knew whose voice the book was supposed to be in or whose POV we were supposed to be in. Sometimes the POV would switch between paragraphs. And there was the motivation of the avenging character. It was never really tied into myth or legend or even gave a why as to how this creature could come back for revenge. This was especially true for the first murder when it's left unclear how the character even died. Was he beat to death by rednecks or did he get killed by a herd of elk?
To muddy the waters even further, a fifth dead body turns up having drowned in a lake where the original hunt took place. The fifth body never ties into the story only to say it happen. Again unclear if that death had anything to do with the avenging creature.

As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm
