Goddamn series TV. I don't want to wait. I want to see this every night until is done.
Lovecraft Country, based on the book of the same name, is what happens when you cross The Green Book with Lovecraft horror.
The show stars Denzel Washington's super-buff son, Jonathan as Atticus Freeman. Atticus heads out on a journey with his Uncle to get entries for his version of The Green Book, a guide for African Americans to find safe places to eat and sleep around the country. So, much like Watchmen, the show starts as a discourse on racism. The group runs into racist cops. They get attacked at a diner. They get kidnapped and taken into the woods by other cops.
But that's not all there is. It starts with Atticus during a night time battle, where he runs through a battlefield but the periods are messed up. He is in fatigues from WW2 but he runs through trenches. Then it gets weird.
It also gets weird during the kidnapping when their is something else in the woods with them.
The book was supposed to be a response to the overt racism in Lovecraft's book, dealing with the question of how do you deal with loving Lovecraft's stories if you are a black man? I might have to go read it now.
I'm invested in this series. It was not a slow burn start. It was right to full speed ahead.

Watched Ep 1 last Sat, and Ep2 last night. I enjoyed it, though the characters make a few mental leaps. I've seen that in some other Jordan Peele work, too...I don't like that. It seems to be too convenient and makes me believe the characters less. It's a bit like Stranger Things, but I want more character development. I also see shades of Star Trek TOS: "The Cage/Menagerie", "Shore Leave", "Catspaw".

PS: I had left the subtitles on. I found it funny that the music descriptions are all over, from [heartfelt music] to [eerie music] to [suspenseful music], can't remember the others, but there's quite a few...

Ep3 - moves on to ghost stories, no tentacles, but then ties back to the main thread at the end. It still feels like it needs something.

I thought Ep2 went to bonkers. There was subtlety about the horror in Ep1. Ep2 felt like we are going right to 5th gear.
I'm watching Ep3 tonight.

S1 Ep3 The Haunted House episode. This show continues to be a horror of the week kind of show. Since it is based on a book which is basically a short story collection, that makes sense. But since all the characters are the same from week to week, I expected more of an arc for the characters.
This episode had some good scares. There is more racism from the neighbors because the leads by the haunted house in an all white neighborhood and the all white neighbors are not pleased.
Eventually at the end, almost as an afterthought, there is a nod to the overall story. Still onboard.

Alrighty then. Since 3 of you are watching, I thought I'd join in. 'Cause I'm a joiner. Besides I used to love Lovecraft.
Ep1 was okay. I agree with what y'all have said for the most part. I'm not totally rocked by it or completely engaged but I'll watch more as the end of E1 was promising. I do like the idea of a reconciliation of Lovecraft's racism. As I said earlier during the shelter in place ( http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomFor...p?tid=5358), I wasn't as sensitive to it as a teen because it was so systemic 40 years ago. I'd probably like the book, but I'm not reading much fiction and KB's review didn't sell it to me. Besides now I have the show.
I've had Color Out of Space ( http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomFor...p?tid=5355) in my queue for a while now. I'll get there eventually. I used to love horror, a fallout of my MQ6 years. After Tara was born, I lost my taste for it. It got to 'jump scare' and stroboscopic for me. Plus after all my medical work, I've seen the insides of humans plenty of times now so splatter gore does nothing for me anymore.
But this did have tentacles, as Greg promised. And I do love tentacles. It's not a hentai thing. I know you're thinking that and that's so racist. Just kidding. It's a Lovecraft thing. Totally a Lovecraft thing.

Ep 4 - Some thoughts (possibly spoilers, but I tried to stay pretty vague)
The whole "Song for your lady" bit seemed conspicuously out of place.
The secret door is obviously right here....
Conveniently, without any planning, they happened to be in the right place, at the right time for the required astrological alignment.
Who closed the do secret door behind them?
and...
Do the sets remind anyone of Star Trek ToS? I bet there's a Horta in there somewhere.

E2 was okay. No tentacles tho. I like the main characters. I liked the castle. It would’ve been better with tentacles.

E3 Again no tentacles. WTH? But there was a basketball player ghost with a baby head. I liked the photo ghost presence. But yeah, haunted house Ep. The show still hasn't hooked me as much as y’all but that’s not to say I’m not enjoying it. I want it to be more ... lovecraftian. More tentacles dammit. Is that so much to ask?
