A booklovers' flick, and we're all booklovers here. In fact, some bookshops have been an underlying thread of DOOM. This is a Spanish-directed film shot in North Ireland and Barcelona, although it all looked like some charming UK seaside town. A widower opens a bookshop, but a village matron wants her building for an art center. The widower finds a kindred spirit in an elderly recluse (HP factor 1 - the Minister of Magic - Nighy nailing the part like always). It's charming, and somewhat literate in the titles referenced. It's charming and poignent, like an old foil-embossed clothbound. I did guess the ending, or at least the main twist, because the foreshadowing of it was glaringly obvious with two scenes that made little sense save for setting up the finale. No swordfights. Recommended for literate DOOMers, of which we all are. Nice date flick if your sigO is literate (which they all are).
