Kung Fu rom-com farces are a total thing and this is very much in the wake of Shaolin Soccer & Kung Fu Hustle. There's even a soccer training moment, THE BEAST (Leung Siu Lung who I just featured in a long interview in the new issue - didn't even know he was in this and was super delighted to see him) and the same qi-alignment-ex-machina conclusion. An aspiring comic book artist (Ashin who looks like a younger wimpy Daniel Wu) longs for the office hottie (the adorable Madina) and summons Wong Fei Hung, Ip Man, Huo Yunjia and Chen Zhen (Bruce) to help. It's absurd on so many levels, like a weird cameo from Jay Chou and Wong claiming he's not going to be the next Zhou Wenzhou (Zhou took over the role from Jet Li in the OUaTiC franchise and plays him in this film). The villain builds an Iron-man-esque suit to defeat all the Kung Fu masters. It did get one random good laugh out of me - a dumb slapstick moment. And it was relatively entertaining once I got past the sappy romance part (Madina is super adorable tho). There were a lot of in-jokes that required you to know a lot about the Kung Fu genre and who these heroes are cinematically. I doubt it works at all if you don't.
Not really DOOM recommended. This is advanced Kung Fu genre satire. cf & ppfy might get it as they're enough up to speed on KF flix to get most of the jokes, I think. Greg will hate it and justifiably so.
