Master Z: The Ip Man Legacy
#1
So Yuen Woo Ping directed a spin-off movie about the loser from Ip Man 3.  Y'all remember Ip Man 3, right? Greg does because I hooked him up with the screener whic resulted in the most enviable selfie so far.  The forum remembers: http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomFor...p?tid=3626.  Now that he's leaving tinseltown, there won't be any more of those.

Okay, so this came out in China last year and it's getting a limited theatrical next week.  I work a lot with the distributor so they sent me an online screener in exchange for a review which I'll write soon.  This was a fun one.  Great fights, even tho it wasn't YWP in the choreographer's chair, it was a protege of his.  But that cast tho.  Bautista. Jaa. Yeoh. YES YEOH!  And even Naason. Who is Naason? Naason Shi. You know Naason. Well, it's my old friend Lunzha, aka Xingyu aka Shi Yanneng.  Srsly, this is a monk I knew at Shaolin, one of the most badass monks I've ever met. I even put him on the cover. There's even a cameo of Yuen Wah, which probably means nothing to y'all, but he's one of the Yuen bros.  And in the lead (not Master Z - not even sure who the Z was really) is Max Zhang.  Good stuff.  Good action.  Caricature but satisfying, physics defying but good percussive dialog, crazy wire fu but thrilling.  Big fights with just enough Hong Kong heroin for a plot.  Themes of father and son, evil gweilos, the black bat (aka batman), and steak. The roles aren't just one dimensional.  They actually have two dimensions. Two whole dimensions.  Well, mostly. At least they aren't totally flat.  Well, the dirty cop is pretty hackneyed, and Jaa's character is never quite explained, but Neeson's and Bautista's roles are deeper than their usual fare.  And Michelle, well, she's still at the top of her game. Her role is on point like always.  She delivers a nice fight, a sword fight no less, and at 56 she still kicks ass.

Yeah, I liked this.  It's a fine Kung Fu film.  And I give it a wholehearted DOOM rec.

Damn. So I'm still in my Michelle Yeoh research (almost done with the 1st draft but I'm about to put it down for the night) and I was looking into this film review which reminded me that I actually wrote an 'official' KFM review that I had completely forgotten about ( https://www.kungfumagazine.com/index.php...ticle=1481 )

That was pre-pandemic. The pandemic blew a huge chunk out of my memory. Maybe I did catch covid at some point and am now suffering from covid brain.

Maybe I should rewatch this. I did enjoy it. I remember that much...
