Twas a perfect date night, just what I needed after last week. We walked to downtown, shared a pot of Pu-Erh at Hidden Peak, dropped $90+ on books for my mom (she's been reading like a fiend to stay occupied and given the cat fail, these are replacement xmas gifts), then dinner at Laili, and the symphony.
Bonny Doon was a world premiere from local composer Wineglass (great name for a composer). More young people were in the audience, presumable his students. The piece was explained as a bird flying from Bonny Doon to the sea, and became rather soundtracky because of that. It was okay. Then Stewart called for an encore, which was a reprise of the latter part of the composition, played stronger the second time, but a bit odd.
Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations was a chance for guest cellist Jeremy Tai to show off. And that he did. Amazing young talent. I had a bit of a coughing fit in the middle of it, which was embarrassing, but I had some cough drops.
Mozart's 40th is one of the best known symphonies of all. Mozart is to symphony as the Beatles are to rock - pop pioneers that never fail to please, full of catchy hooks, satisfying melodies, and experiments with the genre that just spotlight their virtuosity. This is one of Stacy's favorite pieces and they nailed it, bringing such warmth and life to it. The standing bass section really stood out to me, as did the 4th movement (it's the 1st that everyone knows).
And then...another encore. What symphony does encores? It was a short piece by Schumann but I didn't catch the title. A lovely cool down after a wonderful performance.
