The most disappointing installment without Hawkeye. It's absurd and shot in that damnable wobbly cam. An epileptic on a massage chair in an earthquake could have made a steadier shot. Ruined the fights and the Blues-Bro level car chase through Vegas. And how did they ditch all the cops after that for their Mano-a-Mano? Just dumb.

Matt Damon is still the man. He had maybe half a dozen lines in the film. But he's still the man.

Damon was good. Agreed on the shaking. Better than Cloverfield, but distracting. I would have liked to have seen more clever get-aways like he did in the earlier installments (newspaper in the toaster, etc...). Tommy Lee Jones was looking pretty tired. I hope it was makeup/intentional. 

Things that really irritate me: "Enhance!" "Enable the real-time processing" "I've got one more firewall to get through (computer screen shows 3 progress bars labeled Firewall 1, Firewall 2, Firewall 3, with the last in mid-progress)". "ExpoCon Symposium" The CEO's speech about his new platform.

MATT DAMON SAVES CHINA FROM DRAGONS IN 'THE GREAT WALL'


The latest movie in the grand cinematic tradition of the Special White Person.


It turns out the Great Wall of China was erected to keep out dragons. Behold, the trailer for The Great Wall, a fantasy action monster movie about an epic battle against dragons in ancient China... starring Matt Damon. Yes, a thousand years ago, Jason Friggin' Bourne saved the Chinese from dragons.

Directed by Zhang Yimou, and touted as the most expensive Chinese movie of all time, the movie stars a long-haired Matt Damon alongside Chinese superstars like Andy Lau, Luhan and Jing Tian, in a crazy-ass smoke and spears and fire and arrows battle on the Great Wall against fire-breathing dragons.

Well, what is there to say? It's the latest movie in the grand cinematic tradition of the Special White Person.

It should be noted that this movie was made with Chinese money, and is the work of one of the most celebrated Chinese directors. But it's definitely a Hollywood blockbuster, written by Hollywood screenwriters, in English. 

"First and foremost, this is an English-language film, and a Hollywood blockbuster," Zhang tells Entertainment Weekly. "It was already very clear in the script phase." And a Hollywood blockbuster needs a white guy. 

And so, Matt Damon. As we've said many times before, and we'll say again and again -- say it, all together now -- you can set a story anywhere in the world, in any era of history, and Hollywood will still somehow find a way for the movie to star a white guy. You can count on it.

The Great Wall opens in theaters on February 17, 2017.

I posted the Great Wall trailer in coming soon, but it was an early pre-release link that was removed.

I feel ya on the over-romanticized take on I.T. That bothers me a lot in film/tv in general nowadays, especially how image sharpening works so well. I.T. is the new deus ex machina, a quick solution when writers simply can't resolve their own plot devices.

I think the real superpower for Bourne et.al. is how damn fast they get from country to country. Air travel hasn't been like that since 9/11. 

I confused this film with the trailer for the new Jack Reacher. I kept waiting for the gal to get tossed in the slammer by a conspiracy of higher-ups. That mistake provided more plot tension for me, which may have elevated my engagement.

I totally agree w/ya, tg. What this film needed was more newspapers in toasters.
