War of the Worlds
#1
NYRB reissued an old edition of with Gorey illustrations (no full page, just top of page chapter headings). I picked it up because that was the edition I read in back sixth grade or so. Not all the illustrations work but some are very good.

The book is excellent. Wells does a great job with the main character's feelings of disbelief and incomprehension of the situation. His writing is tight and mostly moves along well, and the descriptions are also very good. The only real ridiculous thing is that the Martians feed by directly injecting human blood into themselves.

First Men in the Moon is still my favorite of his books, but this is a close second. Better than The Time Machine.

And since steampunk is getting more popular, it's time for someone to make a movie set in the same time as the book. Spielberg's version was awful! (It would have been even without Tom Cruise.)
