Mickey 17 (2025)

Got impulsive and went to the AMC tonight.

I don't want to spoil anything, but I will say this: I'm having a difficult time thinking of things to compare it to. It's a bit of a reflection on the human condition, with humor and absurdity. There's one clip that makes me think of Dancing with Wolves, but the rest...I can't think of direct comparisons. So, to me, it feels novel. It's compelling. Acted well enough. Most of the cast I don't recognize, except for Ruffalo and his wife who are good. The tone is dark humor, like Brazil.

The time from opening to title card is actually pretty long, but it all works.

Recommended.

Bong Joon-Ho rocks. I’m eager to see this. Is it a big screen experience or can I wait until it pops up on a streamer?

It looks great, but it's mostly about character so I think small screen could work just as well. Ruffalo's false teeth are scary on the big screen

Copy that. Good to know.

Hold the phone. You didn't recognize Patterson? He was Batman. Cedric (HP factor 1). Did you miss the whole Twilight saga?*

* I have never watched a whole Twilight movie all the way through. I've been thinking I should someday but I still haven't gotten around to it.

Well, yeah, but aside from him, ruffalo and Collette (who I think is playing the same character that I've seen her do in other shows). The heavy-ish lead scientist seems like someone I've seen before, but my point was that the casting isn't distracting. Your not watching thinking oh her come Christopher walken or Charlize Theron. They all pull their weight pretty well and help make the story immersive.

I was so excited for this I almost made the trek to Oakhurst to see it when it came out. But things came up. Finally, it appeared on HBO Max.

Bong Joon Ho directs the story of Mickey who signs up for an interstellar expedition to the new planet of Niflheim. His job is to die over and over again for the sake of the crew. Orson Scott Card explored similar story themes back before he went to crazy town. The rule is you can only have one printed version of a person at a time. It breaks a fundamental religious law. Naturally at some point, this law gets broken.

The story wasn't very compelling. Mickey 17 isn't a very compelling guy. There was nothing in his character to root for. The characters around him were equally awful. Mark Ruffalo and Toni Colette play a terrible religious couple leading the expedition. Mickey has two women chasing him and they aren't great.

I should have known from the lack of chatter after the movie came out that this wasn't going to be very good.
As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm
