The Hulu subscription continues to pay off. The Bear was the show with all the buzz last year.
The Bear is a show about a restaurant where the owner has died and the brother steps in to take over. He's a world renowned Michelin rated Chef taking over a Chicago sandwich joint. He has ways of doing things and the crew that was already in place has ways of doing things. The first episode is one day on the line in the kitchen. The restaurant is in arrears on all its bills. They can't get enough food for the crowds. The equipment is breaking down. And they've scheduled a video game tournament.
No sword fights.

I caught two more episodes of the Bear. I'm not sure why this film is such a big hit. No one in the show is likable. The toxic work environment just doesn't make me want to be there. Every episode things get worse. In the first episode, we learn the restaurant owes $300k to a loan shark and that Charm is going to Al-Anon meetings. No one gets along on the cook line. It's all fighting. And yet, the show just won a bunch of emmy awards for best comedy.

I don't understand why they consider it a comedy at all. I saw a couple of episodes, and decided to bail because it just seemed like a bunch of misery that I could do without.

That's the feeling I have at the moment. It's just misery.

Watched the first ep. I thought it was kinda funny. I don’t really cook so restauranteer stress is alien to me.
It didn’t live up to the hype, but I’m told it gets better. I’ll probably watch some more to get a better sense of what all the fuss is about.

Ep 2 was more of the same - kinda funny but not living up to the hype yet. I appreciate how the characters are deepening, and assume that’ll hook me in eventually. But I might’ve given up already without so much buzz around this. I’ll give it a few more…

I watched more than I should have for that very same supposed 'wow' factor. It never hooked me. Although I would like to see what Jamie Lee Curtis did with her bits, but I'm not sitting through two seasons more to find out.

Oh right. I forgot Jamie Lee was I this. I should just skip ahead to that part. Thanks for the reminder.

I think she won the Emmy for her part.

Skipped ahead to the first season finale on the advice of Tara. It’s a game changer, a turn for the brighter, but this still underwhelmed. Carm delivers an impressive soliloquy at AA, an impressive one-shot with a tight frame on his face, shows he can act. The characters and relationships have deepened considerably. I’ll watch more of s2 because it promises to be more uplifting. Jamie Lee is in s2 and Tara tells me that she’s not in much more than an episode or two, but it’s good. Fingers crossed.
The reason why it’s called The Bear is revealed.

Ah. Still don't care. Cancelling Disney/Hulu soon.

I just want to get what all the fuss is. I hate being so out of touch with pop culture (it’s a marketing thing… or maybe an outsider thing… but given the results of the last election, man, I’m so out of touch).
Losing Disney too. Next week. Too damn expensive and I’m not watching enough there to justify it. Keeping Hulu tho - we have them separately.
