I always thought the acting in The Shining was really bad, or maybe Kubrick just went for a really stilted artificial style. I'm with Greg on this one

Kubrick mindfucked Duvall to the point of abuse to get her performance in The Shining. It wasnt acting as much as it was genuine trauma. If I had access to the web, I could dig up some interviews about that process.
