The Shaolin Zone

What part of Bacon Cheeseburger did you meatheads not understand?

I stopped by Tiger Claw today. It went well. We managed to contact my old travel agent friend (now retired) at Shaolin and he's greasing my path so things are coming together nicely. G2 loaded me down with a bunch of stuff to bring including my team jacket (it's going to be in the low 90s & 100% humidity in July). But things are coming together. Now if only I can get my WeChat sorted, things will be good.

I had some pepperoni pizza a week ago. It was ok. Not Jakes. Probably should've been...

Work for YMAA & Tiger Claw is all queued to cover me for my week in China.

I sorted my meals for the flights online.

My first day in China, after being in transit for 24+ hours, is trusting that my Shaolin master will pick me up from the airport. My stupid WeChat is still not working, and unless I can get that going, I may have no communications. My iPhone may die and my gmail may be blocked. I need to dig out my old hotmail account. For there, I need to take the high speed rail to Zhengzhou, and make another connection with an old friend to get to Shaolin. It's a convoluted route in. There are lots of places where something could go awry. I'm trusting the universe more than I like to when in another country where they don't speak my language.

It's getting real.

I might pick up a case of Marlboros at the duty free. Maybe in Taipei. The issue with booze is that I can’t do that in carry on. Learned that the hard way in 2003. I’m planning to travel light - carry on only. It’s just a week.

Packed. Just need a few small items which I’ll pick up tomorrow.

Tried to relaunch WeChat several times and failed. Reached out to them several times. Tried to set up a new account but it kept defaulting back to my original restricted one. So outrageously frustrating. Bumped up my carrier plan to international voice & text.

Established a new hotmail because Hotmail denied that my old one existed and then said my old one was in use when I tried to reclaim it. It’s a backup play.

I’m getting conflicting stories about meta - Facebook is definitely blocked. Some say Gmail is too. I nixxed bringing my Chromebook because it’s Goog reliant and I just can’t get a straight answer.

I might be going blind into this. It’s a weird sensation because 20 years ago, none of these issues even existed - the tech wasn’t there. Now, it seems like my crucial communication line. The uncertainty is giving me the FEAR. I haven’t travelled alone like this years, not since coming home from Italy in 2018. My eyesight has degraded so much and that’s ruining my focus.

Nevertheless, all seems in order, at least as much as it can be. I just have that nagging preflight jitters like I’m forgetting something obvious.

Locked & loaded.

The only lingering item is to pick up some cards from Jonny because he brought me the camera on Saturday without cards. He's in Saratoga so we'll sweep by and pick them up on the way to SFO via Tara's place. It's annoying because we were originally planning to take the coast up and enjoy the ride a little more.

I’m borrowing the company camera (aka Jonny’s camera).

I’m at SFO international terminal A. It’s crazy busy. Forewent the booze and cigarettes at the duty free for US ginseng tea (highly prized in Asia - Wisconsin grows high grade). I’m squatting by an outlet grabbing a charge - got an hour until boarding an 11+ hour flight where I plan to sleep. Got my Rx & a fistful of melatonin.

I have to check in again in Taipei but I have a 6 hour layover. I’ll try post from there too. And then again in China.
