On top of my obesely packed summer, I just got an offer to go back to Shaolin for the World Games. It’s not a fully covered trip - I still have to get there & back on my own which looks like about $2K (which I could totally deduct at tax time) plus the time off work, and I’ve already spent most of my annual allotment with YMAA…
It’s been over 20 years since I’ve been back…

You gotta go. Must be some angle that YMAA can exploit.

There is no try, only do.
You should bring a documentarian with you.

YMAA is distinctly un-Shaolin. It’s hard to explain but there’s nothing I could do there except write a Good News article and that would be a trifle in the scheme of business there.
I’ve decided to make a go of it. Not sure how I’m going to make July work. July & August is packed - every freakin weekend. But it’s an offer I can hardly refuse.
G2 will only be there for the Shaolin events, which is just the weekend. She’s traveling with a local school, doing some tourism in Beijing beforehand and then going to Luoyang. While I’d love to go, I’ve seen that before several times so my plan, as it stands, is to meet her there and be the KFM reporter. I’m hoping I can visit my master, who has a school near Kaifeng, where he’s from. I’ve never been there.
But I have so little time. My vacation hours are pretty much spent and I have other weekends to sort - SDCC, RotR, OSL… that's all in a row.
This summer is a dragon with matches loose on the town.

I'm sorting out this janky Shaolin registration form which makes no sense to me - poorly translated, bad design, didn't even work on Mac - PC only, and there was no category for me. wound up PayPaling $50 to some monk in Shaolin (will get reimbursed). Wacky.
Still haven't booked my flight but have narrowed it down. Texted with my travel agent friend. She couldn't beat Expedia's offering. She's a dear deadhead and has been booking Vegas flights like crazy and yea, she was at the 1st sphere show.
The plan is to go 2 days early and visit my master Decheng, who has a new school near Kaifeng (I think) which is about 2 hours from Shaolin. Then I'll catch up to the US team for the Zen Shaolin Music Festival (don't ask, read my coverage later) then on to the Games for three days. Then home. It'll be a week from end to end.
Fingers crossed that this all works out...

Fucking Expedia. I tried to pull the trigger and buy my airline tix but Ex tagged on unseen fees at the last fucking step, raising it from $1900+ to $2300+.
I've put in another inquiry to my travel agent friend.

Of course they did.
Did you try direct through the airline?

No direct flights. It's very complicated.
But yeah, tried that.

You mean your friend Sal. I didn't go to China with him. He was another one of my fanboys until I had to spank him for selling TCEC videos that he made.
My travel agent friend booked me on flights. Red eyes. Got some long layovers in Taipei.
This is real now.
Shaolin is asking us to submit a 3000 word paper to participate in the 2024 Overseas Shaolin Principals and Coaches Conference. By 'us' I mean 'me' because Gigi don't write. It's due on Monday.
I have two other articles due this weekend. I just got most of the heavy lifting done on one - just need to sort a conclusion and give it a final polish. The next should be an easy write-up but the deadline is soft so I'm switching over to this Shaolin submission next.

“Shaolin Submission” is the new Romance blockbuster you are writing, isn’t it? What’s your Pseudonym? Really Big Monk?
Really Hung-Gar? Long Staff?
