Cunk on Earth
#1
Mockumentary of every world history doc from Brit Philomena Cunk, who is a long-standing character from a show by a creator of Black Mirror. The style is poached with perfect pitch, and Cunk’s deadpan narration goes from inane stupidity to sharp and on point satire. She interviews authentic authorities (apparently) with the most absurd comments and questions, and their reactions are hysterical. Got a genuine lol from me.

5 half hour eps. I just watched the first one and I’m down for more. D00M recommended so far.

E2 is the darkages. Now that I have a better sense of this show’s humor, I found this ep funny and caught myself giggling several times. It’s almost like how Borat skewers the pretentious with shock only this is mocking the experts with extremely stupid lines of questioning. And that works here on several occasions. Cunk’s babbling just nails that tone of documenters and her dumb comments are relentless, many of which hit home. It’s like Monty python meets Black mirror via mockumentary.

I’m going to D00M recommend this one now because I’m thinking the sense of humor here will work for y’all. It’s working for me but it did take 2 eps to settle into it.

Ep01 That was pretty funny. Cunk is from the Ricky Gervais show After Life or a very similar form of that character. Anal Bleaching! And the patter for the show has a tinge of Gervais humor about it. There were a bunch of really funny bits as we cover all of history from plants to the Romans.

For me, I want to see the outtakes when Cunk asks the experts her questions for the first time. That one expert with the huge white beard that seemed to be swallowing his entire head was amazing.

E3 the renaissance. This is my fav so far mostly because it spent the beginning in Florence at several places that we’ve visited. I’m rather getting into Cunk’s humor - it’s somewhat of a one note joke but it continues to work for me. Their eye for satirizing this style of documentary is spot on. And Cunk’s wayward comments can be hilarious. Plus I do enjoy how the talking heads respond to her wacky questions. Very amusing.

E4 is the Industrial Revolution and America. Still quite funny - only 1 more ep to go but there’s a ton of earlier vids on YouTube http://brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomForum/s...p?tid=7489

I just realized tonight that Diane Morgan played one of my fav characters in the Death to 2020/2021 series ( http://brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomForum/s...p?tid=5936 ) which makes sense now because it is again the Black Mirror squad. I hope they make a Death to 2022 and more Black Mirror soon. Although Cunk has been a good in-between fix.

E5 wrapped it all up. Still funny with a few more lol moments. I was rather amused by the Laika bit.

I really enjoyed this series and will continue to explore past Cunk’s on YouTube. Cunk has one punchline but it applies to everything.

Totally D00M recommended.

Saw the Florence episode. It needed a lot more Florence.

Cunk annoys me and entertains me. I feel so bad for the experts. I can only take it in small doses.

That's kind of the point.

The experts are in on it. I watched a panel interview with her and the creators and they said the experts all know and are instructed to treat Cunk like a child. The interviews usually go about an hour to get those choice moments. There's a lot of improv.

Coincidentally we watched e3 again too. Tara came in and that's where she was so we watched over dinner. It was amusing the second time too.

And I feel ya about Firenze. Can't have too much Firenze in anything. We visited the Da Vinci museum there too so that added to the recognition factor.

Cunk of Life is a one-off, just one episode. It’s more of the same, which totally works for me, only like Monty Python, it’s tackling the Meaning of Life. And a few of the bits reach for Monty Python-nesque satire. I giggled at many random bits. Cunk is so vapid but then sneaks in some doozy questions, and it still skewers the genre with precision.

Recommended if you like Cunk.

Worthy of note: There’s a major Black Mirror crossover on Streamberry…
