Happy Moon Festival!

I was invited to a fundraiser event tonight that was tea tasting, moon cake tasting and traditional Chinese music, but it’s in the depths of Chinatown and a $35 buy in then there will probably be awkward fundraising moments that would be out of my budget. Meanwhile I cannot think of anywhere in Mo Bay here where there’s an Asian market where I could pick up some mooncakes. 

I don’t really like mooncakes. It’s the ritual. TC had me post a pic of one of the masters gifting the office some beautiful boxes of mooncakes and it made me nostalgic.

Am I supposed to eat moon cakes? It's a good reason. I like those, although I do really prefer the little rectangular cookies with the pineapple filling (no idea what they call those).

Pineapple cakes are a Taiwanese specialty. We used to get them in the office whenever someone went back, which was often because a third of the company was Taiwanese, and they are very nationalistic, which is obvs if you know anything about their history.

Moon cakes have a wide range of flavors. Usually they're intolerably sweet and fatty. But some are lighter. Some are savory and filled with meat. Some are modern, with chocolate and other more global confectionaries flavors. You can even find gluten free ones now. Five star hotels will have their own special seasonals. Shaolin Temple even had some seasonals. They are usually overpriced. I might look for some next week as there might be sales.

85C Bakery makes them fresh. They have several bakeries around the Bay Area. I'm a big fan of pineapple cakes.

Ah, there is an 85C bakery across from the McDonald's on DeAnza Blvd. Huge lines around the block when it opened.

Sadly it was cloudy here last night and I couldn't see the moon.

There is a good bakery in Vallco Village, almost next to the Ranch 99. When I worked on Wolfe Rd, Christina would meet me, and we'd go over there for pearl tea at Fantasia, and then to the bakery for a couple of pineapple cakes or something. I'll have to go back one of these days. Actually I haven't been there since 2019, but I looked when driving by recently and it seems to still be there.

In front of every Ranch99, there are likely stacks of moon cake boxes. I meant to stop by and pick one up last week when I was in si valley to the heat wave put me off.
