There was Shannon.

She got her own spinoff show...

Kim’s Convenience’ stars Nicole Power and Andrew Phung getting their own CBC shows
 • Mar. 27, 2021 1:30 a.m.

 • TORONTO — Two stars of the soon-to-be-finished series Kim’s Convenience are each getting their own show, one of which is a spinoff created by the showrunner of the CBC hit comedy.
The public broadcaster says Nicole Power and Andrew Phung will star in new, half-hour original comedies set to launch during the upcoming 2021-22 broadcast season.
Power, who hails from in Middle Cove, N.L., will star as her Kim’s” character Shannon Ross in the spinoff Strays.
Kim’s Convenience co-creator Kevin White also created Ross’s new series, which will follow the enthusiastic car-rental agency manager Shannon as she embarks on a new career in Hamilton.
Calgary-raised Phung, who played Kimchee on Kim’s, will star in Run the Burbs as a stay-at-home dad with an entrepreneur wife and two kids.
Phung also created the series with his best friend and collaborator, filmmaker Scott Townend.
Kim’s Convenience stars Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Jean Yoon, Simu Liu and Andrea Bang as a Korean-Canadian family who run a corner store in Toronto.
Ross’s character works with Jung, played by Liu, and Kimchee who is Jung’s best friend.
Producers announced earlier this month the show, which has earned a global following on Netflix, will end for good on April 13 with the final episode of the current fifth season.
That’s a full season shorter than what was planned in early 2020, when the comedy was renewed for two additional seasons at the CBC.
The producers said the decision came after White and fellow co-creator Ins Choi confirmed at the end of production on season 5 that they were moving on to pursue other projects.
“Given their departure from the series, we have come to the difficult conclusion that we cannot deliver another season of the same heart and quality that has made the show so special,” the producers said in a statement.
A publicist says Strays is the project White was moving on to.
The CBC says Strays is currently in production and has been in development since July 2018, while Run the Burbs has been in development since last May.
Kim’s Convenience debuted in 2016 and is based on the award-winning play by Choi.
When news broke it was ending, Lee and Liu took to social media to say they were “heartbroken.”
Strays and Run the Burbs join the previously announced original show Sort Of as new additions to the comedy lineup in the upcoming broadcast season at the CBC, which has also seen several other series come to an end in recent months for various reasons: Burden of Truth, Trickster and Frankie Drake Mysteries.
Bilal Baig and Fab Filippo created Sort Of, which also stars Baig “as a gender fluid millennial trying to live their most authentic life,” says a news release.
Thunderbird Entertainment produces Strays, which also includes cast members Frank Cox-O’Connell, Tina Jung, Nikki Duval, Kevin Vidal, Tony Nappo, Paula Boudreau and Emily Piggford.
The CBC says it will announce more details about Run the Burbs, which is produced by Pier 21 Films, later this spring.
“As our comedy slate continues to evolve, we are thrilled to continue working with Andrew and Nicole and offer audiences two new comedies to look forward to,” Sally Catto, general manager of entertainment, factual and sports at the CBC, said in a statement.
“Both of these series were planned to join Kim’s Convenience on our comedy lineup this upcoming year, to reflect how many young Canadians are forging new lives outside of urban centres in Canada. We look forward to watching Andrew and Nicole as they explore these new stories.”

Ep02 More fun stuff. Not as filled with graphics as Ep01 but enough. Mostly filled with High School problems and learning about powers. And they answered the Hijab question. It is nice they are showing Islamic culture. Some good action stuff.

And after never ever hearing about Damage Control, I saw their name pop up twice in one day. The first time was catching bits and pieces of the first Tom Holland Spiderman and Vulture says he doesn't want to be noticed by Damage Control.

So many easter eggs.

Agreed. MCU just doesn’t miss with its series. Each one is so different but they all fit into the greater picture.

The showcase of Islam is superb. It’s engaging, like a fresh new world, yet not preachy. The Bollywood references were funny especially the comments on Shah Rukh Khan. Will this show pull off a Bollywood dance number? I hope so.

Iman is killing it as Kamala. Her journey reminds me of Evanna Lynch (no relation, right?) who played Luna Lovegood in Harry Potter. Both were fangirls who auditioned because it was their dream and both embodied their roles. Iman comes off so authentic and charming. I can’t wait until she shares a scene with Brie. And I’m wondering when in the mcu timeline this is exactly because Kamala was tutored by Stark.

Too many Easter eggs but they aren’t hitting us over the head with them. They’re there if you look, but if you don’t care, they don’t matter.

I was stoked to hear an MIA song playing when they were washing before the mosque.

I’m ready for Aramis to appear as the villain and for a big superhero fight to ensue.

E3: The dance number. That was disappointing choreographically and cinematographically but funny that they went there. Finally a big fight. It was alright. Still finding this show charming, largely because Iman has such charisma, and the cast has good chemistry. More peeks into Islam - all good and respectful. Now that Kenobi is done, this is my main show.

Since, I'm not as steeped in Bollywood as you, I was perfectly fine with the dance number. It seemed like what you find at a wedding. And I do like the insight into Islam. It's like they are just like us. Crazy!

The show still hasn't returned to the creativity of the first show which I miss. The fight scenes are really slow and the chases are just torturous. And I guess if you are going to do a fight in a kitchen you are going to grab a frying pan.

I still like the show. The dynamic between some of the relationships are very powerful. I feel bad for Bruno. I like the hijab wearing best friend.

**googling Kingo***

Ah, Kingo! Eternals! Kumal.

Missed it.

It seems like I need to go back and watch the episodes with an Easter Egg guide. TQ and I are having a bit of a problem with the accents and the lingo. Tempted to turn on CC.

I almost always have the CC on no matter what I'm watching. I'm accustomed to subtitles watching so much foreign cinema. Plus I often have the volume set fairly low.

But I feel ya on the Easter egg guide. MCU is ridiculously good that way, although I must say that ST: Lower Decks is the all time master of Easter eggs. That show is basically built on top of Easter egg parodies. Perhaps it works better for me because I know ST better than the MCU. ST:TOS was early in my development so it imprinted into the longterm memory banks indelibly.

Ep04 Let's get on with it. Seems like we keep churning through the same material over and over. And the solutions to the problems seem very easy. I did enjoy the chase through the market, especially the car part. But I keep wondering why the Djinns can't simply outrun these other people. There were a few good moments in the fight scene in the temple but the editing was too choppy. Terrible cliff hanger.

M.K. aka Aramis! Finally. A fair role for him.

Love seeing the urumi, gada & madu. And I think I spotted an old AFS Armoury rapier in the background of the hideout.

Interesting to see Karachi. Brought back some India memories. Meant to check to see if it was filmed on location.

I had the same thoughts about Karachi, whether it was real or Memorex. I think my favorite cultural awareness shot was the kids on the beach. Even though the scene was kind of out of place, it was nice to show kids just being kids, no matter their background.
