The Boba Book by the Boba Guys
#1
No, not that Boba. Not the bounty hunter...

This is the second 'cookbook' that my daughter has gifted me that I can remember. The other one was Les Diners de Gala by Dali. That was a gorgeous album, as much an art book as a cookbook, with intriguing recipes like an early version of avocado toast. This one is an ad for the Boba Guys where Tara works outside of Victory.

It's a bit more than that though. It's an exploration of the Asian American experience from the perspective of SF. The franchise started in the Mission and has expanded to become one of the nation's leading Boba franchises. They credit IG having a major impact on their marketing. There's even a page that describes how to make a nice IG pic of your boba drink. It's funny and very contemporary referencing stuff like Drake which I only kinda get.

I don't know why she gifts me these cookbooks. I appreciate them but I'm no cook, not by any stretch of the imagination.

I wasn't part of the Boba gen. It's a Taiwan thing and my family is from southern China via Hawaii. I know more about poi than boba. When Boba rose up, I figured it was another passing fad but it's really taken hold and has a lot of cultural significance for Tara's gen. Nevertheless, there were moments that worked for me, like the recipe discussing haw flakes and medicinal tea.

I remember when G2 & I were in LA with Greg, who was very kind to drive us about for a Shaolin event. We took him to a Boba joint. G2 is from Taiwan but Boba rose up long after she left. She knows it though because there were others at TC who were younger and into Boba, like her son. We both drink it but we aren't that into it. I do like cheese tea.

The Boba Book changed my thinking about it. And the Boba Guys rocks. Best Boba I've ever had. Now I want to try every recipe in the book. But I want to buy it, not make it. Some of the recipes are very involved and take a week+ to prep certain elements. That's way beyond me.

It was an amusing read.

Tara works at the Boba Guys on Divisadero, but good luck recognizing her with her mask on. Most of the bobaristas are young Asians and we all look alike.
