This year’s Ocean Art Underwater Photo Competition managed to produce some amazing underwater photos that showcase the perseverance of underwater artistry amidst the adversity of the times.
Two winning photos told particularly compelling stories. The Best of Show by Gaetano Dario Gargiulo is a once-in-a-life-time moment where a curious octopus took a selfie of itself with the photographer’s family.
“On the day of the photo, I remained in the tide pool as the tide was too low to venture outside of its boundaries. In one of the shallowest parts of the pool I noticed an octopus. I placed my camera near its den and the octopus started interacting with it. It came completely out of the den and to our amazement it started shooting pictures! My son (3 y.o. in the background) was very curious about the octopus.” Gaetano Dario Gargiulo

You have no idea how much restraint I exercise in not flooding this thread with hentai gifs.
The struggle is real.

Octopuses may dream
Sylvia S L Madeiros
Octopuses change colour when they sleep, and it might be because they are dreaming.
Sidarta Ribeiro at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte in Natal, Brazil, and his colleagues have found that octopuses go through two distinct stages of sleep – active and passive. The researchers recorded four common octopuses (Octopus vulgaris) in the laboratory over several day and night periods, amassing more than 180 hours of footage.
During the day, the animals slept for more than half the time, says Ribeiro. “In quiet sleep they stay in the same position for long periods of time – very quiet, very pale the pupils closed – and breathe regularly in a very quiet matter,” he says.
This passive sleep was punctuated every 30 to 40 minutes by a brief period of active sleep, lasting 1 to 2 minutes. In this phase, the octopuses showed changes in body colour and texture, including the protrusion of fine bumps on their skin known as papillae. The animals’ eyes and arms also moved, their suckers contracting. “It’s clearly a very active state,” says Ribeiro.
The team tested whether the octopuses were truly asleep in this state by presenting them with a video of some crabs. “When we stimulated the animal with visual or vibratory stimuli, they did not react,” says Ribeiro – in marked contrast with their responses when awake.
A similar pattern of sleep occurs in birds and reptiles, and the researchers suggest that the active sleep state in octopuses might be analogous to REM sleep in mammals – the phase in which we dream the most.
“If the octopus is having something like a dream, it’s probably a very short behavioural sequence, it’s not a narrative,” says Ribeiro. “Whether they are having some sort of inner life with a narrative about themselves… we don’t know.”
“It would be very interesting to see what’s happening in their brains while they go from awake to quiet and then active sleep,” he says.

So I searched ‘octopus spanking gif’ to reply to Greg’s post above.
It sent me down that tentacle hentai rabbit hole again. I should know better.
Maybe I do but I just can’t resist following that white rabbit. Whatever is he late for, I do wonder...

Quote:Lobsters, octopus and crabs recognised as sentient beings
Amendment to Animal Welfare (Sentience) Bill following LSE report on decapod and cephalopod sentience
From:Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, The Rt Hon Lord Benyon, and The Rt Hon Lord GoldsmithPublished19 November 2021
![[Image: s300_defra-sign-grey.jpg]](https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/default_news_organisation_image_data/file/205/s300_defra-sign-grey.jpg) - Crabs, octopus and lobsters to be recognised as sentient beings in government policy decision making
- Decapod crustaceans and cephalopod molluscs will be recognised under the scope of the Animal Welfare (Sentience) Bill
- Amendment to Bill follows London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) scientific research findings on decapod and cephalopod sentience
- Existing industry practices will not be affected and there will be no direct impact on shellfish catching or in restaurant kitchens
The scope of the Animal Welfare (Sentience) Bill has today been extended to recognise lobsters, octopus and crabs and all other decapod crustaceans and cephalopod molluscs as sentient beings.
The move follows the findings of a government-commissioned independent review by the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) which concluded there is strong scientific evidence decapod crustaceans and cephalopod molluscs are sentient.
The Animal Welfare (Sentience) Bill already recognises all animals with a backbone (vertebrates) as sentient beings. However, unlike some other invertebrates (animals without a backbone ), decapod crustaceans and cephalopods have complex central nervous systems, one of the key hallmarks of sentience.
Today’s announcement will not affect any existing legislation or industry practices such as fishing. There will be no direct impact on the shellfish catching or restaurant industry. Instead, it is designed to ensure animal welfare is well considered in future decision-making.
Quote:Animal Welfare Minister Lord Zac Goldsmith said:
The UK has always led the way on animal welfare and our Action Plan for Animal Welfare goes even further by setting out our plans to bring in some of the strongest protections in the world for pets, livestock and wild animals.
The Animal Welfare Sentience Bill provides a crucial assurance that animal wellbeing is rightly considered when developing new laws. The science is now clear that decapods and cephalopods can feel pain and therefore it is only right they are covered by this vital piece of legislation.
The Bill, when it becomes law, will establish an Animal Sentience Committee made up of experts from within the field. They will be able to issue reports on how well government decisions have taken account of the welfare of sentient animals with Ministers needing to respond to Parliament.
Agreed on octopus. That's why I stopped eating them (on top of a traumatic childhood experience I had being a mainlander with my Japanese Hawaii family).
I don't eat lobster or crab often but that's just because I can't really afford the real stuff that often. And I disagree about their sentience. They're feckin bottom feeders. Literally. Still keeping them on the menu...when price allows.
Wait does this include squids? Because squids aren't sentient. Only octupussies. To put it in Yetinese - Squids are the squatches of the cephalopod world. Still keeping them on the menu too.

What about cuttlefish? I think they’re often fed to other critters and used as bait. Pet birds sharpen their beaks on cuttlebones

Agree on all your points -- except maybe nixing octopuses from the dining table, and only because I'm still a carnivore.
But I'm struggling to see the teeth in this pronouncement. Maybe it gives researchers in certain areas more prestige. Or maybe it allows deep sea scuba divers to notch the "sentience kill count" column on their harpoon handles more often.
I'm nobody's pony.
