Massage Detective Joe (2017)
#1
This is a silly Japanese spoof of detective shows. Joe is a total introvert but an amazing masseuse after he activates his pressure points. Random murders happen around him. Two clown detectives, Money and Tiger, rely on Joe to sort it. He solves crimes by massaging the suspects and reading their pressure points. There's a cut pigtailed gal that keeps encouraging Joe's detective work by mocking other detective shows, making lots of self referential jokes. She and Joe work with two other masseurs and there's a wise woman boss who advises Joe a lot. The pressure points are superimposed like a manga. Given that Stacy is a massage therapist and we watch a lot of detective shows, I couldn't resist this, but I doubt she'll be that into it.

Two eps in - both relied on the same formula. 12 eps @ 25 mins each. May watch more.

No sword fights...yet. Not DOOM recommended... yet.

This show picked up on ep 5. There's larger mysticism at work as the crew go to a hot spring inhabited by a ghost. It's shot differently, the ol' minicam view. There's a self-referential bit at the beginning where the crew is talking about how their vacation was like a TC show where they change it up on ep 5 by going to a hot spring.

Because of the stupid next episode feature that automatically rolls over the ep and cuts out the credits, I'd been missing an end scene where they describe the massage points and what ailments they alleviate. That's kinda cool.

The Japanese word for 'massage' is 'massaji'.

So annoying. Especially when I'm looking for my name in the credits.
As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm

The Japanese word for 'Lynch' is 'Rinchi'. srsly.

The credits roll over what can only be described as a introverted-massage-detective-nerdy-bollywood-dance. The acupressure pointer is an inset and is qualified by a statement that reiterates that the show is fiction (as if you couldn't figure that out) and that massage results may vary.

I've been trying to pluck an ep for Stacy but with no success. Still not DOOM recommended. It's just another weird DM binge...

A friend of mine did a stint teaching english in Japan (I think that just meant having conversations with folks trying to learn english). The Japanese word for "milk" is "miruku"...

Catsup is the English word for kechiap (鮭汁) meaning 'salmon gravy'. At least, that's one theory.

Japanese call this wasei-eigo - Japanified words from English. There's a lot of them. Technically speaking, anime is one. Pokemon is one too, short for pocket monster.

Biru for beer is one of my favs. In Chinese, it's pijiu. China mashes them up even more. pi is their approximation for the be in beer. jiu means liquor. Japanese does this too sometimes, like tonkatsu. Ton means pork. Katsu is their take on cutlet.

None of this will appear on the quiz.

Wow that 'in the news' theme music brought me right back.

I had catchup/ketchsup for breaky with my eggs today. I feel in tune with this right now.

Well that was diverting. It comes together in the end. The overarching story binds it all together. It still wasn't great and I never found an ep worthy enough to recommend to Stacy, but I'll recommend it to some acupuncturist friends. It's goofy. Some of the humor was way to Japanese for me to follow, like references to characters in other shows that I didn't know.
Never got a sword fight, which was disappointing. Not DOOM recommended because none of you are into acupuncture.

About that Bollywood end credit scene...

I just did a search and discovered that this is available on multiple alternative platforms. Not that I'd recommend it for DOOM. I'm just sayin...
