RIP Cousin Thomas
#1
Thomas Lai was the eldest son of my dad's sister Mary, who I used to meet at a bar in Chinatown almost every time I went to Chinatown when I lived in SF. His daughter Charlotte (who claims we met but I have no memory of her) and his two brothers, who call my mom regularly, called my mom to let her know that he died in his sleep. He was slightly estranged from the family, a bit of a playa. He did some time for embezzlement.

I think the last time I saw him was when we still lived in SF, so well over 20 years ago. He worked in some sort of social services building in soma, near the freeway. We met for lunch at that hole-in-the-wall joint with the killer pastrami while I was working for AFS. That might have been the last time we were together...I don't quite remember if that was the last.

I didn't really know him that well. I remember camping with him, his brother, and his sons at some nearby state park. I remember he seldom came to the lavish CNY banquets that Aunt Mary got us in because she was active in Chinatown society and often bought a table for our family.

Yep. Too much.
As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm
