Preston Sturges: The Rise and Fall of an American Dreamer
#1
I was complaining online that there was no documentary about Preston Sturges during yesterday's PS Birthday Celebration. It took about a nanosecond for someone to set me straight. This was part of the American Master series on PBS back in 1992, I think. I got it off youtube and mirrored it from my phone to my TV which I am inordinately proud of. It makes it seem like I have mad tech skills.

It's a very straight ahead documentary. It's of interview of people who knew him interspersed with clips of his movies and of him. The best part was the old-time "News on the March" narrator who just blasted along with the story. Maybe the Citizen Kane narrator would be a more apt comparison.

I learned a few things I didn't know especially his childhood. It was fun seeing Joel McCrea talk about Sturges. Betty Hutton has not aged well.

The one story I did get confirmed was that Isadore Duncan, strangled by her scarf when the scarf got caught on a rear wheel of her moving car, was gifted the scarf by Sturges's mother.
As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm
