ANIMATED SHORTS
It's a really disappointing batch this year. Stacy took me for my birthday - she generally disdains animation and this only reinforced her prejudice.
Dear Basketball - technically interesting - a love letter to basketball from Kobe. It feels very contrived and I worry it'll win.
Negative Space - this one had some heart and is my personal pick to win. It takes on the death of a father, something almost all of DOOM can relate to now.
LOU - Pixar's entry about a lost and found box in a school playyard and a bully. It does all the cutesy crap that Pixar shorts always do, but totally misses the mark. Sometimes being formulaic saps your soul.
Revolting Rhymes - a dark take on a Roald Dahl rhyme (Dahl can be so grimm). Almost worked but a bit too long. The wolf overstayed his welcome.
Garden Party - Amazing animation but just technically interesting. The mcguffin was gross. You gotta like frogs and I don't.
There was these really dumb interludes plus some 'outstanding' extras to fill out the 80+ min running time. Lost Property was kind of moody, but then didn't really go anywhere. Weeds felt dated, like a Pixar from years ago - it was about dandelions and I've never longed for s shot of Round-Up so bad. Achoo was painfully dumb about a sniffly dragon in ancient China.
We should've gone to Black Panther again. Stacy wants to see it (she also disdains comic book superhero movies, even more than I do, but she's interested in this one and Tara gave it a thumbs up for her).
