Mission Impossible III

Isn't that TomKat crazy?

It was big roller coaster of movie with it's typical massive loigic errors. What else would you expect? But the big action set pieces were very well done despite the fact the Florida Keys bridge now connects to the beltway, but I quibble.

At times, it did feel like an extended version of JJ Abrams other spy show, Alias. It was nice to be told that Berlin was in Germany and Shanghai was in China. I'm still not getting the cleverness and trickery that were the hallmarks of MI, but it had a few moments. Lawrence Fishburne does a fine job as the boss with a hard on for Ethan Hunt.

I'd see it on the big screen becuase you need the big visuals and the booming soundtrack.

It was so astoundingly Alias and that's what made it very entertaining for me. The way the plot moved, the globe hopping, the plot twist tempo, the addition of the naive sig o. The tech guy (Shawn of the Dead) has just doing an imitation of Marshall. The whole look of IMF headquarters was exactly like SDI. Greg Grunberg even made a cameo. It's funny because I've always thought that Alias was the closest successor to Mission Impossible. It lacks the cold war, poker face, psych ops intensity, but it always struck me that Abrams watched a lot of MI and gave it his own spin.

I was a big Alias fan, but I've Lost track of it and I think it's like only 3 episodes more. I felt they played it all out with last season's assembling of the Rimbauldi device causing the Apocalypse zombie invasion. I find Abrams style to be very entertaining, not in a deep sort of way, but his tempo of twists and his focus on characters. I like Lost. I seldom watch it, but when I do, I'm entertained. MI3 made me really want to check out Felicity, which I never saw ever.

Hollywood people are Fools. Why did they spend so much money on that piece of junk? Mission Impossible III is a flop, well below expected grosses. Why did they make this movie.

Mission Impossible current Worldwide box office gross: 257 million

It's all about the numbers, baby. Wait until Poseidon opens up wide.

I almost forgot to say another reason why I liked MI3 was Maggie Q. She's sort of the hapa Andie McDowell. She was the best part of Naked Weapon http://www.maggieq.net/movie%20naked%20weapon.php and Gen Y Cops http://www.maggieq.net/movie%20gen-y.php

I debated whether starting another thread would be cluttersome and decided that I was probably the only one here into Alias. The finale was odd. Come to think of it, most finales are odd. The only finales that sticks out in my mind was ST:TNG and MASH. I've heard the 2nd Bob Newhart series finale was good since he wakes up in the 1st series in the end thinking the 2nd series was all a dream. Anyway, Alias really ended at year 4 with the Rimbaldi fireball zombie apocalypse. The episode just before the finale put everything sort of back to the way it was in the first season, and the finale resolved it. The end was very rushed - I could see Abrams had some idea of how he wanted it to end, but didn't want to put too much effort into it and kept the door open for sequel movies. In a way, MI3 was also part of the finale. I'm wondering if when he comes to the end of Lost, he'll redo Gilligan's Island for the big screen. Tomorrow is the season finale of Lost, and it looks more promising than the Alias finale was.

I have 2 Alias seasons on DVD (one courtesy of the Queen, thank you again) and I haven't watched either of them all the way through yet. The early years were the best, and I'll savor them later.

I couldn’t find an MI:2 thread so I’m posting my unfiltered notes here. I figure you can decode my babble notes … or not.

Digging into some John Woo research by request. Expect more of these. No apologies here. If you don’t like John Woo you should turn in your D00M card right now. He made a lot of cheese for Hollywood but he nailed a few and his HK triad flicks are untouchable. A pioneer in balletic gun play and ultravi. Join me on this rewatch journey.

Seen on Amazon.

MI2 - so cheesey ubiquitous slow mo  - artsy in a caricature way like an homage to the roger Moore 007 in his later films
Woos love of helicopters-choppers
Blowing scarves in the wind in slo mo
So 2000
Sense of epic panorama shots
Bellerophon & chimaera - virus
Prophetic of the big pharma conspiracy theories
Not in tune with MI franchise - an outlier - just the masks, perhaps a foreshadowing of face off
Tom mostly glowers
2 hand pistol blasting while diving shot
Slow mo pigeons (or doves)
Brendon Gleason is almost trump like in his countenance
Trench coats like capes
Big car crashes - refreshing over the cgi crashes of today
Oz
