I love Judge Dredd.
The comic is written as Batman where the entire world is The Joker. It's hard to describe Mega City 1. Basically everyone is homeless, poor and crazy. Some add violent into the mix and require a controlling force known as Judges.
Think of the relationship of Mad Max and the copter pilot in 'Road Warrior'. Mad Max is the straight man to the copter pilots antics. That's 'Judge Dredd'.
The movie succeeds as an action flick. Non-stop shooting and explosions, lots of gore (in slo-mo 3d no less!) and a semi-followable plot. It fails in delivering the comic-book visual of zany costumes, characters and color.
Granted - I was pissed from the first 5 seconds when they revealed the setting was America, not England. Fuck you 'Constantine'! Weirdly enough though, I always read Judge Dredd's voice with an American accent and it totally works for Karl Urban. He saves the movie. I haven't been riveted to a masked character since Darth Vader, and no, he NEVER takes off the helmet.
I guess what I'm saying is that this is a GREAT action flick, a mediocre 3D flick and (for me) a weak Judge Dredd flick.
At least they aren't going after my sacred Rogue Trooper comic.
