Chevy Chase has nothing on us.
Dee Dee did some last minute shopping Christmas Eve. She got pulled over because someone stole our registration sticker from our Scion. The incident made us late picking up my mom for the drive to my sister's house in San Ramon. While gathering her things our dog (Artemis) pooped on her rug. Cleaning that made us late to my sister's house.
My sister was dealing with my nephew who had driven away from home in a haze of pot and Xanex (and some other anti anxiety thing that makes you suicidal). My nephew eventually returned home (after a call to the cops) and was taken to the hospital for evaluation. He came home just as we were leaving and all was well.
Just after we dropped off my mom in Rossmoor (around 10 PM) we got a flat tire. I changed the tire while Dee Dee held a flashlight, both of us being soaked by the rain.
Christmas morning, since the Element was sporting a mini-spare tire, we drove the registration-less Scion to Dee Dee's family get together in Reno. The weather started getting rough, our tiny car just slid, I've never been in a snow storm before and was trying to keep the window defrosted, the transmission from slipping, the brakes working and the sliding to a minimum. We got stuck in traffic for over an hour. By the time we reached the 'Chains' checkpoint they had gone from 'Chains optional' to 'Chains required'. No problem - we had chains. We had to U-turn a mile to get back onto the freeway in the chain-installation area (another hour in traffic).
I had never installed chains and spent 45 minutes before giving up. I got in line for one of those $30 chain installation guys. He was ready for us 20 minutes later but told us our chains were too small. We didn't have the additional $50 cash so we once again did the U-Turn back to the mile-away next exit.
By now we decided we weren't going to get to Reno before 2013 so we headed home. I was going about 20 MPH when some nutjob pulled off the shoulder in front of us. I slammed on my brakes and gracefully slid within an inch of a parked pickup and a group of innocents standing in front of it before regaining traction.
Dee Dee still swears she does not know how we avoided killing a bunch of people that day.
The drive back was a Hell of blizzard, rain, traffic and potholes (Oakland).
The next day getting our tire replaced at Costco is another story.
Merry Christmas!
